Don Bosco Technical School Sihanoukville

Description of the Project / History

                                                                                                                    >>Back

The work for Don Bosco Technical School in Sihanoukville was started in 1997 after the land was purchased and the construction of buildings followed through the generous support of various benefactors from abroad.  After accepting the first batch of students in October (1998), it was inaugurated in January (1999) in a ceremony presided by His Excellency Sar Khang (Deputy Prime Minister).

At that time the school had three buildings: the Welding Section, the Electrical Section and the Mechanical Section which housed the Sewing Section temporarily. The Salesian Procure in Bonn through Jugen Dritte Weld (Bonn, Germany) helped to raise the funds for these.

Later that year two more buildings were built. The first housed the Secretarial and Sewing Sections.  This was donated by DMOS Comide of Belgium.  The second housed the Automotive Section and this was donated by Stichting Sawasdee of the Netherlands.

In 2000, the Theory building and the Boarder’s building were constructed the former through the generous support of Jugen Dritte Weld and the latter from Misereor Germany.

By 2005 girls stopped to ask for the Sewing section, a national problem due to the increase of textile companies that contract several girls directly without asking any previous formation. The space of the section was almost unused for about two years. In October 2007 was opened a new section: social communication. 50 boys applied even if the condition was to have 12th grade and some kind of English. Only 10 youth were selected to be the first batch.

On 11th February 2007 His Majesty Norodom Sihamoni paid a visit to Don Bosco Sihanoukville. He visited the sections, talk with the educational community and open officially the new program: the Don Bosco Hotel School.

In May 2007 was opened the Daily Youth Center with the dedication of the Don Bosco Brother Sun House Youth Center to activities related with children and youth. The House is also a space for meetings, retreats and conferences with the Dominique Savio Audirorium.

From the first batch of students until now, we have graduated around 1000 young people from the various vocational-technical courses we offer.

At Don Bosco Technical School, we prioritize the poor young people who have no opportunity to further their education in the tertiary level. Through skills training we aim to prepare them to join the blue collar working force of Cambodia. Through moral training in the spirit of our founder St. John Bosco, we aim to prepare them for the life ahead as caring members of their family and as honest citizens of the country.
