Description of the project
Don Bosco
Technical School Phnom Penh provides educational opportunities to orphans and
vulnerable youth (OVYs) as well as out-of-school youth (OSYs) which will empower
them to become moral and productive citizen in the technology-oriented Cambodian
society of today and tomorrow. Don Bosco Technical School offers a unique
two-year technical vocational education and training (TVET). Don Bosco’s
Preventive System of Education emphasizing the personal, religious and moral
growth of the individual trainee inspires opportunities for employment
preparation as well as higher education.
Leading the TVET System in Cambodia, Don Bosco Tech Phnom Penh seeks to develop in the trainees the values of responsibility, integrity, honesty and loyalty and strives to foster in them a commitment towards moral convictions, social awareness and concern. Twinning it by instructions in technology in both the theory and the practical applications, the trainees are prepared to become technicians, skilled craftsmen and/or supervisors in their technology major.
Don Bosco
Tech Phnom Penh ”leading the TVET System in Cambodia” started when the SDBs took
up their work for Cambodians in the refugee camps in Thailand from April 1989 to
May 1991. Six vocational training centers were built in four refugee camps. It
was, then, an answer to the many requests of the past pupils “to come with us”
that the SDBs accepted the challenge to rebuild Cambodia by giving orphans and
the poor children opportunities to learn a profession so that their families can
come out of the cycle of poverty and contribute to the development of the
country.
On May 24,
1991 the SDBs arrived in Phnom Penh and on September 1991 opened the first TVET
course in Mechanics and Electrical Technologies at the Government Orphanage of
Preik Phneu with 61 trainees and 27 staff members.
On March 26, 1992 The Ministry of Education and Don Bosco Foundation of Cambodia signed the agreement to build Don Bosco Tech Phnom Penh in a 12-hectare land at Phnom penh Thmey, Russey keo District.
On May 24,
1996, His Excellency Somdech Hun Sen presided the solemn ceremony of the
Realization of Don Bosco technical School. The School Year 1996-1997 has 381
students and 105 teachers and technical instructors.
